del principe Boemondo I d'Altavilla (1050-1111), partivano per la Terra Santa.
Nel 1480 Otranto fu espugnata dai Turchi, nella famosa Battaglia di Otranto, furono uccise 800 persone poi dichiarati beati Martiri idruntini proprio perché preferirono la morte piuttosto che la conversione all’Islam.
I Turchi distrussero anche il Monastero di San Nicola di Casole (poco a sud di Otranto). Importante monastero brasiliano, centro culturale all’interno del quale si trovava la più vasta biblioteca dell'allora occidente.
Dopo la pesante distruzione da parte dei Turchi, la città si rianimò, presa dalla voglia di riscattarsi. Nel 1539 contava 3200 abitanti con 638 fuochi. In questi anni, Otranto fu contesa dai Veneziani e nuovamente dagli Angioini. Nel frattempo gli Ottomani tentarono nuovi assalti alla città, nel 1535 e nel 1537, ma fortunatamente Otranto riuscì sempre a resistere.
A partire dalla seconda metà del Seicento, Otranto visse un netto calo della sua importanza (continue invasioni provenienti dal mare, spopolamento e malaria).
Nel Settecento si assiste ad una lenta ripresa.
Il primo progetto di bonifica fu stilato nel 1868 dal Genio Civile di Bari, il quale, dopo aver rilevato tutta la superficie del lago e dopo averne misurato la profondità, riconobbe le zone di impaludamento e suggerì il modo di sanarle. Le paludi, quindi, lasciarono lo spazio a terreni coltivabili. Venne ripresa l'agricoltura.
Nel periodo napoleonico la cittadina divenne Ducato del Regno di Napoli e si verificò una netta ripresa grazie al Ministro Fouch. Le fortificazioni otrantine furono soggette ad una totale trasformazione a partire dal 1866 e molti beni urbanistici della città finirono nelle mani del demanio.

- Il centro storico è considerato uno dei centri storici più belli d'Italia ed è incluso nei "Borghi più belli d'Italia"
- La Cattedrale (1080-1088); Vero gioiello è il pavimento a mosaico in tessere policrome di calcare locale durissimo (eseguito tra il 1163 e il 1166 da un gruppo di artisti capeggiati un monaco basiliano di nome Pantaleone.
- Chiesa bizantina di San Pietro (risalente al VIII secolo)
- Il Castello di Otranto (fatto costruire da Ferdinando I d'Aragona tra il 1485 e il 1498)
- Santuario Santa Maria dei Martiri
- Cappella Madonna dell'Altomare
- Chiesa Vergine degli Abissi
- Cripte e Chiese Rupestri dell'anno mille (San Nicola, del Padreterno e di San Giovanni, quest'ultima con annesse catacombe).
 

Eventi Culturali e Folkloristici che si Svolgono nel Territorio Comunale

- Festa dei Beati Martiri (12-14 agosto), sono i protettori della cittadina. I festeggiamenti si aprono con la tredicina il 31 luglio in Cattedrale con la solenne esposizione dell'urna dei Martiri.
- Festa di San Francesco da Paola (una domenica di maggio)
- Festa della Madonna dell'Altomare (prima domenica di settembre)
- Alba dei Popoli , prima alba d'Italia (31 dicembre - 1 gennaio).
 

Risorse Naturalistiche Presenti nel Territorio Comunale

Otranto è situata tra la valle dell'Idro e l'Adriatico e si adagia sulla parte più orientale della costa pugliese. Punta Palascìa o Capo d'Otranto è il punto più ad Oriente d'Italia, sarebbe questo inoltre il punto di separazione tra il Mar Ionio ed il Mar Adriatico.
Il territorio comunale si estende per 76 km², si affaccia lungo la costa orientale salentina per circa 20 km e si trova tra tra gli 0 e i 101 metri sul livello del mare.
A nord della città, sulla costa, di importante pregio paesaggistico e naturalistico si trovano i Laghi Alimini e la Baia dei Turchi, la Specchiulla e le spiaggia di San Giorgio e Frassanito.
A sud si trova invece Porto Badisco, nota località balneare considerata il primo approdo di Enea, descritto nell'Eneide di Virgilio. A Porto Badisco si trova inoltre la Grotta dei Cervi, che contiene importanti graffiti
paleolitici.
Dall'ottobre 2006 parte del territorio di Otranto rientra nel Parco della costa di Otranto-Santa Maria di Leuca e del bosco di Tricase, istituito dalla Regione Puglia allo scopo di salvaguardare la costa orientale del Salento,
ricca di pregiati beni architettonici e di importanti specie animali e vegetali.
